Mid-Michigan Update March 2019

November 2018 brought our annual Stell Reception where we awarded the Carolyn A. Stell award to Honorable Joyce Draganchuk on behalf of her remarkable contributions to her community, through both volunteer commitments and her extensive career achievements. As a WLAM regional board member, we were immensely proud. We also awarded TWO scholarships this year as we found both applicants so deserving. Debani Gordan and Shelly-May A. Forrester were given a free bar exam prep course and $1,500.00 to cover the costs of their up-coming bar exams. Here is our board with the three award winners:

The Stell Reception once again was better attended then any previous year. We had many local judges in attendance including Honorable Amy Krause who did a touching introduction of her dear friend, Honorable Joyce Draganchuk.

It was truly a room full of support and empowerment for women.

We had no December event to avoid conflicting holiday plans for members but our board did get the opportunity to share the books our members generously collected with the Phoenix Court participants. We were so pleased to see the excitement they had for this opportunity, and we have heard that a few participants have read through multiple books already! We look forward to continuing our region’s support of their recovery.

With the capital city located in our region, we would like to congratulate the 53 elected to the State legislature as well as our woman governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General. Thank you all!!

On March 8, 2019, our region co-hosted an event with the Ingham County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section. This event was purposely held on International Women’s Day and included a panel discussion following a viewing of “The Judge.” This film is about Judge Kholoud Al-Faqih, the first woman appointed to a Shari’a court in the Middle East, whose career provides rare insights into both Islamic law and gendered justice. We had a great turnout and donations were accepted to support the Ingham County Phoenix Court – a treatment court for minor human-trafficking victims that our region has created a relationship with.

We are excited by a number of upcoming events, including:

  • June 27th – our Annual Dinner where the WLAM documentary will be viewed followed by a panel discussion of women leadership;
  • November 13th – our regional members will be sworn in to the US Supreme Court.

We hope you can join us!
