WLAM Proudly Sponsors Warrior Lawyers Documentary

WLAM is proud to announce that we have agreed to sponsor Warrior Lawyers, a one-hour PBS documentary on Native Americans role models.  “Warrior Lawyers” examines contemporary Native American issues related to Youth Leadership Development, Sovereignty, Native American Law, ICWA, Social Justice, Economic Development and Cultural Revitalization. These are the critical and vital underpinnings of Native American Nations.

Native American Lawyers who work directly with tribal communities and focus upon Indian law and jurisprudence, frequently address unique and complicated legal and social issues that are often rooted in discrimination, historical trauma and cultural destruction.  These contemporary Warrior Lawyers are actively bridging the gap between law and order and community and culture to help resolve the major social justice and social welfare challenges confronting Indian Country today.

The first Native-American President of WLAM was Beverly Clark (deceased), who served from 1978-1979.  More recently, from 2011-2013, WLAM was led by Past President Hon. Angela Sherigan, Associate Judge for the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in Manistee.  Hon. Sherigan said “WLAM is committed to it’s continued support of Native women. WLAM is made up of strong women and Tribes have always had strong women leaders, together we will continue to work for the rights and protection of all women.”

The film has the potential to reach and impact millions on PBS, through the educational markets and via free community screening events.  The program will be an excellent long term educational and inspirational resource for reservation, urban and rural Native American youth, families, tribal citizens and communities as well as Indigenous and non-Native professionals in tribal community development, law, education, social work and government.

“WLAM is proud to sponsor this project.  It is a fantastic way to build bridges of understanding, unity and dialogue between Natives and non-Natives, and will have an impact for generations to come,” said WLAM President, Donna MacKenzie.
