Girl Rising was featured in the Metro Times and on 950 AM!
WLAM hosted a showing of “Girl Rising” at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak. The film tells the stories of nine young girls in different parts of the world (Cambodia, Haiti, Nepal, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Peru, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan) and how they each overcame nearly insurmountable odds to realize their dream of gaining an education. It is narrated by well-known and renowned actors and written by prize-wining authors. For the most part, the film includes the actual girls in each featurette, but I know at least one does not for her own protection. About the girls.
Girl Rising is a global campaign for girls’ education, and the film uses these anecdotal stories to share the message that educating girls can transform societies. They provide resource toolkits on their website for groups or people who want to host screenings to help spread this message around the world. Women Lawyers Association of Michigan became aware of Girl Rising and felt it was important to host a screening in Michigan to join in spreading this important message.
With respect to the fundraiser aspect of our event, the two non-profit organizations we selected to donate the proceeds from this event to fit in very well with the message of the movie. The WLAM Foundation is committed to supporting the education of women and has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to promising women law students in Michigan, and Enough SAID is working to bring to prosecution the backlog of cases involving sexual assault crimes with the ultimate goal of preventing sexual assault. One of the stories in the film involves a sexual assault situation.
Around the world, millions of girls face barriers to education that boys do not. And yet, when you educate a girl you can break cycles of poverty in just one generation.
