WLAM Advocacy and Endorsements
The Association takes positions on various issues and candidates for judicial offices that are relevant to its mission in furtherance of a just Society.
I am honored to embark on my year as the President of the Women Lawyer’s Association of Michigan. This year our organization’s focus is on grit, namely – courage, conscientiousness, perseverance, passion, and resilience. We recognize as an organization that this past year has been unprecedented for our members, the legal community, and our communities. Despite the challenges posed with a global pandemic and the social and racial injustices brought to light, our organization and our members remain gritty. As we move into the “new normal” let us be remain steadfast in our mission as an organization: to secure the rights of women in society, to advance the interests of women members in the legal profession, to promote improvements in the administration of justice, and to promote equality and social justice for all people.
The work of the executive board, our committees, and membership will exemplify our grittiness. Perseverance will be demonstrated as we announced our Inaugural WLAM Leadership Class composed of promising young law students and provide them some of the tools for success and leadership positions in law, business, government, the non-profit sector, and the judiciary. Passion will be highlighted in our Leadership and Awards Committee where we continue to promote members for leadership positions within the association and nominate them for awards within the legal and local community. Courage will be emulated in our Diversity and Inclusion Committee that launched last year with the guidance of Immediate Past President Roquia Draper, in raise awareness on the importance of diversity and inclusion within our organization and in those areas that align with our mission statement. Conscientiousness will be illuminated in our newly launched WLAMom committee, which provides resources and advocacy for members in caregiving or family roles which navigating lawyering. Finally, Resilience will be represented in our eight regional chapters, in the events within their communities whether in person or on Zoom, and in our planning for the next Annual Meeting. Our Organization has long known how gritty it is, and this upcoming year, it will become even more widely known to others.
WLAM is dedicated to securing the rights of women in society, advancing the interests of women members of the legal profession, promoting improvements in the administration of justice, and promoting equality and social justice for all people. As advocates, we recognize that there is strength in numbers. Whether we are in a court room or on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol, WLAM’s voice is louder when we join together.
